Platform engineering in robotics covers the infrastructure that lets robotic systems run reliably, predictably, and at scale outside the lab — CI/CD pipelines for embedded software, OTA update systems, simulation infrastructure, fleet management tooling, telemetry and observability, and the build systems that hold hardware-software products together. It is often the function that separates companies that can deploy reliably from those that cannot.

The engineering is genuinely cross-domain. Robotics platform engineers need to understand edge compute constraints, hardware bring-up, real-time system requirements, and cloud-native infrastructure patterns simultaneously. That breadth is rare, and it is typically developed through direct experience on robotics programs — not acquired from cloud or web infrastructure backgrounds.

Platform engineering roles are harder to fill than they appear because the job description often reads like general DevOps or SRE, which attracts candidates without the robotics-specific context. What distinguishes a strong robotics platform engineer is understanding of hardware-software co-development workflows, experience with constrained embedded targets, and comfort with the physical deployment environments robots operate in.

Candidates from pure cloud or web infrastructure backgrounds frequently underestimate the complexity of robotics platform work. Qualification requires a detailed technical conversation rather than a resume screen — the relevant experience does not always surface through job title or keyword search.
